Hawthorne District Residence

Picture
Designed to provide a feeling of intimacy and enclosure in the midst of the bustling Hawthorne district, this garden contains a collection of unusual plants.  The classic home inspired a deck with Bungalow details, creating an outdoor living space that feels like a part of the original structure.  Future improvements will include a cobble and crushed rock garden entry.

Cathedral Park Storm Water

Picture
A project to manage the storm water runoff from the large boat ramp parking lot, this project strategically intercepted runoff and developed storm water planters with two designs to retain and filter the water.  In a normal rain event these will significantly reduce the untreated runoff into the Willamette River.

Schiller Residence

Picture
The Schiller Residence garden is a Mediterranean-style escape in Portland's Woodstock neighborhood.  Designed for a homeowner who is not a gardener by nature, it creates a peaceful setting with low maintenance and water demands.  The bluestone patio is intersected by a circle of fine crushed rock surrounded by a sweep of mounding herbs and ornamental plants.  The geometry is playful, with a pleasing asymmetry.

Oaks Bottom Trail

Picture
The Oaks Bottom Trail is the only connection to the popular Springwater-on-the-Willamette Trail between OMSI and Sellwood.  It begins near the Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge Parking Lot on Milwaukie Avenue and crosses the wildlife refuge to provide a safe link to the Springwater Corridor Trail for bikes and pedestrians.  The project includes a design that minimizes wetland and wildlife habitat impacts, a porous trail base to allow hydraulic connectivity, storm water management, habitat restoration, interpretive signage and whimsical center line stencils.

SW Portland Residence

Picture
This back garden was carved from a very steep slope with several rain water outfalls.  The challenge was to create usable space, manage the runoff in an attractive manner, and minimize the need for costly engineering.  The planting is a mix of native and non-native, with an eye to sustainability and beauty.
